Dear Parents and Guardians,
At Salinas Elementary, we are committed to providing a safe, productive learning environment for all students. Recently, we have noticed an increase in social media-related issues affecting our students, ranging from peer disputes and cyberbullying to distractions during the school day.
While social media and online gaming platforms (such as TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram, and Discord) offer opportunities for connection, they also present significant risks to the safety, mental health, and emotional well-being of young people.
Key Safety Concerns & Risks
Cyberbullying & Harassment: Group chats and public forums are frequently used to spread rumors, share embarrassing images, or exclude peers, leading to deep emotional distress.
Exposure to Inappropriate Content: Children can easily encounter sexually explicit material, violence, or dangerous "challenges" that promote self-harm.
Mental Health & Addiction: Constant notifications and the pressure for "likes" can create addictive behaviors, disrupting sleep and causing anxiety, depression, and lower self-esteem.
How You Can Help
We ask for your partnership in monitoring and guiding your child’s online activity:
Set Firm Boundaries: Keep devices out of bedrooms at night to ensure adequate sleep and prevent unsupervised nighttime access, where the highest risk of danger occurs.
Review Privacy Settings: Ensure your child's accounts are set to private and that they only interact with friends they know in real life.
Discuss Digital Footprints: Remind your child that what is posted online is permanent and can have long-lasting consequences.
Monitor Activity: Regularly check your child’s phone, apps, and conversations, especially if they are under the age of 13.
If your child reports an uncomfortable online exchange, please take it seriously and, if necessary, contact our School Counselor (Ms. Murphy)/Social Worker (Mrs. Buchanan) or Police.
We encourage you to talk with your children about being kind and respectful online. Working together, we can ensure our students remain safe and focused.
Thank you,
Ms. Allen
